Thirunelli Temple Wayanad is known as “Thekkan Kasi” or “Dakshin Kasi”. It is firmly believed that a dip in the river Papanasini, running crystal clear downhill, washes away one’s sins. Thirunelli is a famous beautiful village in the Wayanadu district of Kerala State in India. Blessed by nature, surrounded by dense forest and rich in flora and fauna. Thirunelli is also a village that does not grieve over the period of modernity and the worries of reform and urbanization. The Thirunelveli Temple has become a major pilgrimage centre during the reign of Chera King Bhaskara Ravi Varma. Thirunelli was previously known as “Amalaka Gramam”. Amalakam means ‘gooseberry’.
